Floria Sigismondi

Born to Italian opera singer parents, Floria Sigismondi has led an existence forged both in the theatre, where stories are retold, and in the avant-garde, where futures are envisioned. In her still photography work, Floria pushes her trademark marriage of the poetic and the macabre to its limit, while managing to encompass the same emotional punch as her work in the moving image.

Originally studying painting and illustrating at the Ontario College of Art, it was when Sigismondi took a photography course that led to her obsession with the medium so that she eventually graduated with a photography major. She recently published her third book of photographs, Eat the Sun, which features many of Hollywood and music’s most celebrated luminaries, such as Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton, Daniel Kaluuya and Saoirse Ronan.

Floria has directed music videos for Rihanna, Björk, David Bowie and The White Stripes, work which earned awards such as MTV’s Music Video of the Year Award (Justin Timberlake), MTV Europe’s Music Video of the Year Award (Sigur Ros), honors at the UK VMAs, LIA, The Junos, the MVPA Awards and most recently, Video for Good at the MTV EMAs (Sam Smith). She has collaborated with brands including Gucci, Samsung, Nike, Thierry Mugler and MAC Cosmetics. Sigismondi’s film and tv directing credits include The TurningThe Runaways, starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, and episodes of American Gods and The Handmaid’s Tale for Hulu.
